Wild Roof Terrace in Berlin-Mitte

From Zero to 360° garden on the 6th floor

Newly moved into their attic apartment in Berlin-Mitte, the E/W family quickly realized that the most important thing they needed for their wrap-around terrace was privacy. Not only was I able to give them that privacy but together we developed the idea of dividing the very narrow, long terrace into small rooms that could be used as an extension of the living spaces. The family was also inspired by the abundance of perennials and grasses in Piet Oudolf's garden designs.

Plants with purpose - all year round

If balconies or terraces are visible from indoors, then that is the case for the whole year. Therefore, the planting must have something to offer all year round. In addition to plants that are dynamic - growing, flowering, changing their foliage to create a different picture month after month - I also use static, evergreen plants that continue to provide privacy in key places in winter.

A roof garden is not for every plant

Toof terraces are places of extremes: the sun blazes, the wind whistles and the rain can pound. Plants should not only be able to tolerate these conditions but thrive in them. With the right pots, a good substrate and - of course - a finely tuned selection of plants, the terrace becomes an oasis for both people and wildlife.
